When you take out the drawers and observe the piece inside and outside, and from top to bottom; you could tell that this was entirely made by hand. It's too, "imperfect, " to have been built with the assistance of a machine. The hand-carved keyholes, the off-center positioning of the locks, wooden handles/knobs, only nails with square heads were used, drawers are held together by dowel joinery, and the 3 wide boards used for the backing instead of more modern plywood are just a few obvious signs that this is a turn-of-the-century piece. Although the stain and finish are old, I don't think that they were applied when the piece was built.
Even the sides of the drawers were stained and finished, which is something you only see on pieces this old. Taking the time to stain and finish parts that would not often be visible, are things that were commonly done by people back in the day. There are 3 keyholes, but only 1 lock (top drawer).
The lock was removed from the middle drawer, and the bottom never had a lock. Considering that the piece is well over 100 years, it is in excellent condition. One of the three wide planks of the backing is split from side to side, but it's not loose nor is it a structural threat--just a charming quirk. The dresser has the typical nicks, scrapes, scratches, and spots of worn finish here and there that you would expect to find on a piece this old.
However, there are no breaks, rot, warp, or any other serious flaws. Our carpenter thoroughly inspected the piece and didn't need to make any repairs.
He did reinforce the bottoms of the drawers, which kept sliding out of place, but he didn't need to glue or reinforce any other part of the dresser. The drawers slide in and out with ease, and the knobs are tight (no jiggling or play). The chest is strong and sturdy and is ready for another lifetime of service!
